Wind, nor'easters and the shoreline
Staten Island has a long coastline, and storms off the harbor and the Atlantic can bring strong wind and driving rain. Nor'easters in particular test ridge caps, rake edges and flashing. Shingles that were nailed lightly or have lost their seal can lift and tear.
In winter, freeze and thaw cycles and ice at the eaves can push water under shingle edges. Good underlayment, ventilation and edge details help. When we inspect a roof here, we look closely at the edges and the ridge, since wind damage usually starts at the perimeter.
