Rain, low ground and drainage
Hoboken is low-lying, and heavy rain can overwhelm street drainage. That does not flood roofs directly, but it makes roof drainage more important, because water that cannot leave the roof quickly sits and finds weaknesses. Clear drains and good slope are essential.
Wind off the river tests parapets and coping, and summer heat softens older tar. During a visit we look at scuppers, drains, downspouts and the places where roofs meet walls. A well-drained roof tends to last longer and give fewer surprises after storms.
Clearing leaves from the drains before a storm is a simple habit that helps.
